New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI), after Bihar, is going to launch Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across the country, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Election Commission, in its order of 24 July, said that it is to launch revision to safeguard the integrity and reliability of the voter lists.

EC Order

The order reads, "The Commission has now decided to begin the Special Intensive Revision in the entire country for the discharge of its constitutional mandate to protect the integrity of electoral rolls."

The order further says, "Maintaining the integrity of the electoral roll is fundamental for the conduct of free and fair elections; the electoral machinery, eligibility conditions, manner and procedure for preparation of electoral rolls are provided under the RPA 1950 and the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960 ("RER, 1960"), framed under the RPA 1950."

The detailed schedule for the nationwide exercise will be announced at the right time, the Commission said. The announcement comes as the opposition is protesting against the SIR in Bihar.

Tejashwi Yadav Criticized Process

Former Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav has criticized the process on several occasions and has suggested that the opposition may not participate in the upcoming state elections. The situation has also affected Parliament, with protests causing disruptions to the monsoon session for four consecutive days. Earlier, the Election Commission explained that the revision is meant to remove duplicate and ineligible voters, especially those who are registered at both their permanent and current addresses.

Migrants do not need to worry—descendants of voters listed in 2003 are not required to provide proof of ancestry. EC highlights issues in Bihar's voter list This week, the EC pointed out major issues in Bihar’s voter list during its ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The survey found 18 lakh voters who are deceased, 26 lakh who have moved to different constituencies, and 7 lakh with duplicate entries.

The EC defended the SIR, saying it helps maintain the integrity of elections by removing ineligible voters, as required by law. In an affidavit, the EC stated that Aadhaar, voter ID, and ration cards are used for identity checks, not for proof of citizenship. The Supreme Court, which is looking into the legality of the SIR, will hear the case again on July 28.
