The incident occurred on September 3rd, but surprisingly, his family learned of it 15 days later from his friends. Nizamuddin's father, Mohammad Amsuddin, said he learned of his son's death from his friends.
According to the Santa Clara Police Department, they received a 911 call on September 3rd reporting a knife attack in a home. When police arrived at the scene, they found Nizamuddin pinning his roommate to the ground and holding a knife. The roommate was seriously injured.

Police opened fire, injuring Nizamuddin, who later died at the hospital. Police have termed it an "officer-involved shooting," and the case is being investigated in collaboration with the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.

Nizamuddin went to the United States in 2016 to pursue a master's degree in computer science in Florida and later worked at a tech company in California. However, after being fired, he suffered mental stress. He wrote in a LinkedIn post that he was unfairly dismissed and cheated out of his salary. He also mentioned racial hatred and questioned the American mindset.

The family has demanded that the Indian government, specifically the Ministry of External Affairs, intervene in the matter and facilitate the return of the body to India. Nizamuddin's body is currently being kept at a hospital in Santa Clara, where formalities are being completed.
