Mumbai: Heavy rain and thunderstorms lashed Mumbai on Monday morning, causing widespread waterlogging and disrupted transport and flight operations with the issuance of an orange alert for Maharashtra’s coastal districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD Advisory

The advisory came as the city woke up to intense rain, thunder, and lightning, particularly in areas like Panvel, where residents reported persistent thunderstorms since early morning.

The local trains in Mumbai, considered the lifeline of the city, are experiencing delays across all three primary lines—Central, Western, and Harbour—because of the intense rainfall that the city has been facing.

Currently, all trains on the Central railway line are experiencing delays of 15-25 minutes, as reported by commuters.

The rainfall caused widespread waterlogging and disrupted transport and flight operations.

Waterlogging Widespread

Several low-lying areas, including Kurla, Sion, Dadar, and Parel, were severely affected, with viral visuals on social media showing vehicles wading through flooded streets early in the day.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, no major waterlogging was reported anywhere in the city or the suburban regions on Monday. However, flooding was witnessed in some of the low-lying areas in the city.

Monsoon Reaches Mumbai

The southwest Monsoon has advanced further into several parts of the country, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, and the northeastern states, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

In its latest update, the IMD said the monsoon has advanced further into areas of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra (including Mumbai), Karnataka (including Bengaluru), the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, and parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

It has also advanced over more areas of the west-central and north Bay of Bengal, as well as the remaining parts of Mizoram and the entire states of Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh. Parts of Assam and Meghalaya also experienced the monsoon onset as of May 26.

The current Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) now passes through Mumbai, Pune, Sholapur, Kalaburagi, Mahbubnagar, Kavali, Agartala and Golpara, among others.

The weather office stated that conditions remain favourable for further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, more areas of Maharashtra, the rest of Karnataka, and additional parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
